A quick note. I am as much against kids being
exposed to pornography or other inappropriate material as the
next person. But, the nature of the internet is such that any
Government attempting to legislate control makes about as much
sense as poor old King Chanute commanding the tide not to come in.
What makes this reprehensible in Australia is that our federal Government is well aware of the impossibility of implementing their legislation, but as payoff for securing the vital GST vote of Brian Harradine they were prepared to do anything he asked. Even if it will ultimately cost you and I a fortune and achieve absolutely nothing.
Final note. Harradine got the legislation he wanted according to his 18th century world view. The resultant laws have not a bean's chance of ever being enforced and will stand as testament to the extent our current coalition government is prepared to politically prostitute itself to obtain its ends. I didn't vote for them, so you must have.
Comment on the 2001 election
The return of the Howard Government has resulted in Senator Richard Alston, the man christened "The worlds biggest Luddite" by the British e-publication The Register retaining his ministry. Don't forget that this is the man who thought he could ban e-mail and outlaw online gambling in Australia. Hopefully his staff will exercise a tighter rein on him this term and prevent him from looking quite as big a fool.
Just another boring day in paradise........
